First 'Meet Your MP' Event A Great Success
!
The
first Democracy Now, ‘Meet Your MP’ event, held in Michael Gove MP’s
Surrey Heath constituency, at Hall Grove School, Bagshot in Surrey was heralded
as a great success by those that attended.
Over 97% of those that responded to questions
asking if they would attend a similar event again, and if they would recommend
attendance to others, said they would on both counts.
Michael
Gove, a well known Times journalist and media commentator before he became
a member of parliament, was invited to introduce himself to the audience at the
start of the event and explain why he chose to give up a highly successful media
career to become a politician.

Wide Ranging Questions
Well over 100 local people attended the event to pose their
questions on both local and national issues to their MP.
The
evening was structured into subject areas around the 44 questions that were pre-submitted
by attendees prior to the event, from questions submitted on the night and from
additional questions and points taken from the floor throughout the proceedings.

Single Panelist 'Questiontime' Format
The format of the event was billed as a ‘Single
Panelist Questiontime Style Event’, a prophetic description as it turned
out as the event was held a week before Michael appeared on Questiontime with
Diane Abbott MP, Michael Winner and others.

BBC Crimewatch Presenter, Jacqui
Hames - Makes her Case
Local
celebrity, policewoman Jacqui Hames, best known for her role as a presenter on
BBC’s Crimewatch for the last 16 years, took Michael to task on the issue
of the proposed amalgamation of the Surrey Police into a wider area organisation.
Michael pointed to statistical evidence that smaller regional police services
operate more efficiently than the larger ones to support his opinion that Surrey
Police should remain independent.
Constituent's Opinions Canvassed
Michael
had no prior knowledge of the questions that he was to be asked and responded
with comprehensive answers to every issue that was raised, particularly on the
issue of housing – his own shadow ministerial responsibility. He also took
the opportunity to canvass the opinions of his constituents on a number of issues.
